Villains & Role Models

November Villain

While we're still in the maelstrom of accusers coming forward, it's hard not to finger Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain as the villain of the month. First there were two women alleging sexual harassment while he was CEO of the National Restaurant Association. Hmmm. And they both received large settlements to go away and be quiet. Wow, that's a problem. Then a third and that's a clear pattern. Then a fourth who describes what has to be classified as an assault – with signed affidavits corroborating the account – accompanied with "You want a job, right?" And Cain continues to deny he's ever done or said anything inappropriate. Infuriating! Like the women in the movie 9to5, they're going to teach him a lesson at an upcoming D.C. press conference with several in attendance.

November Role Model

DPS school board member Arturo Jimenez was re-elected to represent Northwest Denver on November 1 after a bruising campaign. Even though his achievements were maligned, his intentions misrepresented and his commitment questioned, Jimenez emerged victorious. He maintained his dignity and his cool throughout the ordeal, and for this he has earned our role model of the month award.

November Quote

"But let's hope we all come together to solve the problems because they aren't going to go away and we have to do this for our kids."

- Sen. Rollie Heath

Heartbreak of loss, promise of victory
Many progressives had their hearts broken this election. Paid sick days went down. Prop 103 for public school funding was defeated. Several of the school board campaigns got ugly. It was painful at times.

But now that I've had a week to recover and reflect, I'm feeling hopeful. This week's elections around the country showed that progressives are not down and out at all. Ohio showed their overreaching GOP Governor John Kasich that collective bargaining is still valued. Mississippi voters decided against an initiative that would have stripped away women's reproductive health rights.

As the legendary labor leader Joe Hill supposedly said, "Don't mourn, organize." Colorado will be a hot spot politically in 2012 so let's take our lessons learned on November 1, combine it with the wisdom of the states that won last night and move forward to achieve the promise of victory next year!
